Unlike
airports, seaports and utilities which need security to keep bad guys out, prisons require security measures
to keep bad guys in. For this reason,
prisons face challenges that are wholly unique. Often encompassing large areas,
prisons employ multi-layered security protocols, including inner and outer
perimeter fences, interior man traps, group cell blocks and individual barred cells—measures
designed to build upon each other, with another trap succeeding in the event one
fails. In addition, prisons comprise diverse social and ethnic populations,
which often spark turf wars and other acts of violence among inmates.
Given
this intense and complex security situation, prisons must confront this
challenge with a solution that complements and strengthens each individual
facility’s existing security measures. In doing so, prisons will be more
adequately positioned to safeguard all levels of the facility—keeping
prisoners inside the walls, protecting guards from inmate-instigated violence, and
preventing warring inmates from harming one another.
By
integrating the PureActiv wide-field surveillance and perimeter detection
system into its existing security protections, prisons can help protect the
lives of guards and inmates as well as the facility’s critical infrastructure,
including buildings and exterior walls. PureActiv’s satellite imagery,
advanced video detection and tracking technology and algorithm-based settings
equips prison personnel with specific information to deflect and reduce
security threats located within the prison’s interior walls and outside in
the facility’s exercise yard. The technology’s interactive
interface can be programmed with specific detection parameters and integrated
with microwave security systems, infrared cameras, and other sensors. PureActiv
alarms when security parameters are violated, and then it tracks and records
the security threat, helping security personnel launch an appropriate emergency
response.

group of inmates plans to harm another inmate from a rival group. |
Premeditated
violence among groups of inmates is common in prisons. Usually before a group
strikes, they often gather in large numbers. However, with PureActiv,
operators can program the system to alarm when more than 10 inmates gather in
the same area, helping guards prevent this violence before it happens. Further,
if the group does manage to harm
their target, operators can identify the attacker(s) using PureActiv’s
camera recordings. |

| Desperate,
an inmate makes a break for a prison’s inner fence, hoping to scale it
as well as the outside fence before being detected by guards in the watch
tower. |
PureActiv,
especially when integrated with fence and buried ground sensors, will alert
security personnel of the attempted escape, providing them with information,
such as the location of the breach and a physical description of the inmate,
to help detain the prisoner. Effectively, PureActiv serves as a remote
‘watch tower,’ allowing guards to be more productive elsewhere. |
