PureTech System issued vehicle counting patent by US Patent Office

Software developer receives patent covering video based vehicle counting.

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- PureTech Systems, a leader in geospatial video analytics, today announced the issuance to it by the US Patent Office of a video based car counting patent. US Patent No 8,339,454 B1 “Vision-based car counting for multi-story car parks,” covers the technology used in PureTech Systems’ car counting solution. This patent applies to the automatic counting of passing cars through the use of video cameras. The patent addresses the need for occupancy data by high traffic car parks such as those in airports, sport stadiums, city centers and major malls. Such information can be used to direct drivers more efficiently to levels and zones with available spaces and in turn contribute to the car park throughput. Many other reasons such as fuel consumption, decreasing pollution, or avoiding traffic jams can be cited as other benefits of routing drivers more efficiently to empty parking spaces.

Although PureTech System primarily focuses on perimeter protection solutions within the security space, its video analytics expertise apply to many markets, as is highlighted with this patent which addresses an issue within the transportation market. "One of the unique aspects of the patent is it does not need to rely on test patterns or use of blocking beams, but can still tolerate full or partial transgressions into the opposing lanes while ignoring vehicles moving in the wrong direction,” states Eric Olson, vice president of marketing for PureTech Systems. It also addresses common problems encountered in these types of environments, including very low ceiling heights, specular surfaces, ignoring non-vehicular object, shadows and seasonal changes. Recent deployment of a system equipped with the newly patented counting algorithm saved the customer almost $5 million dollars in installation costs versus the estimated installation costs of a non-video based counting system.

PureTech Systems specializes in video analytic algorithms and the use of geospatial solutions for security applications. As furthered through this issued patent, PureTech strives to lead the market in the development of highly accurate video detection and control algorithms to provide security or improvement process efficiency for its customers.
