Protecting Dams and Power Generating Stations Video Analytics

Protection of dams and remote power generating stations is a difficult task.  These facilities typically consist of several remote sites that make up a large network.  While there are many technologies that help to detect physical intrusion threats remotely, detection is only half of the battle.  Combining detection sensor technologies can provide dams and power generating facilities a complete remote detection and non-lethal deterrence for critical infrastructure protection.

Image Capture – Remote facilities often have limited ambient or facility provided lighting.  Video Analytics - Thermal Camera DetectionTherefore, to provide adequate detection over long ranges, FLIR thermal cameras are an excellent choice.  Models with 4CIF resolutions (704 x 480) can provide enough video pixels for detecting humans beyond 1 km, in various environmental conditions.

Intelligent Video AnalysisVideo Analytics through a system, such as PureActiv, provides and automated means of monitoring thermal video signals and identifying potential targets.  Today’s geospatial video analytics can further filter potential targets by their physical location, the type of object (e.g. human, car, truck, etc.), speed of the object, and type of behavior.

Location of Authorized Personnel and Assets – GPS asset tracking systems, such as those provided by Remote Tracking Systems, not only provide a visual indication of security and non-security assets, they also share a common frame of reference with the PureActiv video analytics, namely the ability to corroborate on track locations to confirm a person detected by video analytics is or is not an authorized person.

Target Detection and Tracking – Once the system has an understanding of all objects meeting intrusion criteria and assesses them against known friendly objects as provided by the GPS system, the resulting list of objects are potential threats (e.g. Friend or Foe) and the system can begin to automatically track the target using camera auto follow technology and issue appropriate alarms.

At this point, the system has automatically detected and corroborated on the threat.  It has also issued alarms and started tracking the target without any need for operator interaction. However, the system has the intelligence to take additional security actions, including deterrence.

Audio Deterrence – In the same manner the video analytics can be applied to a PTZ camera to automatically follow a target, it also has the ability to direct a LRAD (long-range acoustic deterrent) to the exact location of a target and maintain tracking, even as the target moves.  The LRAD technology can provide powerful audio warnings while focused on the intruder.  If the intrusion persists, the LRAD can emit piercing, behavior altering deterrent tones and distracting white light.

The integrated system can be monitored and controlled from a remote command and control center, allowing users to manage geographically separated sites from a single location.  This proven technology is deployed in large perimeter security systems around the world including ships, seaports, military bases, dams, and nuclear utilities.
